Middle-aged models on She’s Got the Look with Kim Alexis

August 18, 2008

What a mentor can mean: “What kind of turned it around for me were the mentors I had at Highland Park High school. My basketball coach was like the father I didn’t have.” Tanya is talking about Darrell Pursiful, and his wife, Lola. “I often thank him for taking a special interest in me, and … all the teammates. … He tells you the good things you’re doing when your life isn’t that good.”

Local and meaningful recognition: Before she hit the TV screen, Tanya was recognized by friends in Highland Park. “Of all my accomplishments, being inducted into the Highland Park High Alumni Hall of Fame was one of my most memorable accomplishments.”

Focused and fearless: “I set goals. And I’m just very organized. … I just believe that there are certain things that need to be done. … On one of the shows, they teased me about being a perfectionist. … I think it’s more striving for excellence … just doing well in what I do.”

Makeup matters: “I don’t feel I always have to have makeup on. … People relate to your flaws. …When you show you’re not together all the time, then they’re more likely to latch on to you. … There are some women at 5 a.m. who come to the gym all made up, and I’m thinking, ‘Take it off, lady.’ “

Do her kids care that “you got the look”? “Heck no; I’m just mom and chauffeur and cook and maid.”

So you want to start a fashion business?

July 18, 2008

Entering the world of fashion is like every other business you need to be prepared, have a vision, a road map and be ready to multi-task.

The business of fashion or as I call it Fashion(nomics) is a far cry from the glamour of fashion. Every successful fashion designer knows and understands this. Tom Ford realised that fashion was a business. A very, very difficult business. “I don’t understand people who say that business and creativity is not compatible … I don’t pretend to be anything other than a commercial designer and I am proud of that.” Tommy Hilfiger pays attention to every facet of his business and every business plan and marketing strategy is minutely detailed and thought through.

Most successful designers understand that the success of their business is dependable on the “commercial aspect” of their designs. Successful designers are grounded in reality. They may have extravagant fashion shows but they realise the essence of their business is the commercialisation of their clothing where the designs can be made cost effectively and be palatable to the consumer.

Fashion models are available in plenty nowadays.

The Manekin Robotto fashion model robot

July 18, 2008

Welcome to Bikini Models and Fashion Industry Blog. We will discuss how fashion models are performing well as entrepreneurs.

The Hyogo Prefectural Institute of Technology recently presented [JP] a humanoid robot that is programmed to walk like a fashion model. The researchers claim they used materials easily available anywhere for the development of the robot, which comes with a frame made of aluminum.

The Manekin Robotto (fashion model robot) stands just 160cm tall, which might not be enough to let it run on cat walks instead of real models. Weighing a more realistic 30kg, it moves through 16 joints and motorized cylinders built into its body. The robot is able to cross and bend its legs, just as human models are supposed to do. Too bad it’s so ugly.

Generally a PC is needed to control the movements but if you insert an SD card holding pre-saved instructions into the robot’s memory card slot (located in its head), it can also move independently. The Manekin Robotto can also be remote-controlled via a cell phone.
